Moldova and Ukraine Take Historic Steps Towards European Union Membership
On June 25, 2023, Moldova and Ukraine began formal negotiations to join the European Union (EU), marking a significant milestone in their long-held aspirations for membership. The launch of accession talks comes after both countries applied to join the EU in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Moldova, a small country situated between Romania and Ukraine, has been plagued by corruption and relies heavily on remittances sent by its diaspora. The European direction was spearheaded by President Maia Sandu, who aims to join the EU by 2030. Despite facing challenges in implementing democratic and judicial guarantees required for membership, Moldova remains committed to the European path.
Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since 2014, has undergone extensive reforms as part of its EU membership bid. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a Ukrainian national flag in Kyiv on February 2, 2023, signaling the launch of accession talks. The country's application to join the EU came just days after Russia's full-scale invasion.
Both Moldova and Ukraine face a long and arduous journey towards membership. However, their determination to join the EU is driven by their desire for closer ties with Europe, democratic reforms, and a move away from Russian influence.
Despite the historic developments, challenges remain. Hungary, a Russian ally within the EU previously blocked Ukraine's bid to begin negotiations. The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged that the path ahead will be challenging but full of opportunities.
The launch of accession talks marks an important step for Moldova and Ukraine as they work towards becoming full members of the European Union.
