At least 14 people were tragically killed and over 70 were injured when a massive billboard, measuring about 230 by 164 feet (70 by 50 meters), collapsed during violent dust storms and heavy rainfall in Mumbai on May 13, 2024. The collapse occurred at around 4:30 p.m. local time and fell onto a gas station.
According to reports, the billboard was located in the suburb of Ghatkopar and collapsed during a thunderstorm which included heavy rain and high winds. City officials have blamed the turbulent weather for the collapse, but investigations are ongoing to determine if any other factors may have contributed.
The incident has shocked Mumbai residents, with many expressing their condolences on social media platforms. The rescue operation continued into Tuesday morning for those who may still be trapped.
It was later reported that the billboard was owned by a man named Bhavesh Bhinde, who has over 20 cases against him including one of rape. A case of rape had been registered against him in January this year and a chargesheet had been filed. Bhinde had contested the state election as an Independent candidate from Mulund constituency in 2009 and admitted to having over 23 cases registered against him under Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act and Negotiable Instruments Act.
The billboard, which was a 120X120-foot structure, had been erected without the necessary civic body clearance. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered action against all illegal hoardings in the city and has filed a case regarding this incident as no permission had been given for the hoarding.
The families of those who were killed in the tragedy have been offered a compensation of Rs 5 lakh by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and those who were injured will have their medical expenses covered by the government.
