A mysterious respiratory illness affecting dogs has been reported across the United States, with cases identified in at least 12 to 14 states. The illness, which presents severe symptoms including fever, a lingering cough, and in some cases, pneumonia, is causing concern among veterinarians and pet boarding facilities. The symptoms are similar to bordetella, also known as kennel cough, but the illness does not respond to typical antibiotics.
Veterinarians and pet boarding facilities are taking additional precautions to protect the dogs in their care. These include increased cleaning procedures, wellness checks, and limiting the number of dogs accepted for boarding. Dr. Ana Ortiz at Pet Paradise in Apopka and Kiersten Benitez, owner of Bark Orlando, have both implemented these measures.
However, experts are unsure if this is a new disease or an old one that hasn't been widely discussed. East Texas veterinarian Dr. Gary Spence advises dog owners to avoid places with a concentration of dogs, such as parks and groomers, and to get their dogs vaccinated for bordetella every six months.
Despite the concern, there is still much that is unknown about this illness. As research continues, pet owners are advised to monitor their dogs closely for symptoms and to seek veterinary care if their pet becomes ill.
