In the 2023-24 NBA season, two rookies stood out for their exceptional performances: Victor Wembanyama from the San Antonio Spurs and Chet Holmgren from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both players were unanimously selected for the NBA All-Rookie First Team, receiving all 99 first-place votes.
Wembanyama, who was also named Rookie of the Year, led all rookies in scoring (21.4 points per game) and rebounds (10.6), and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Holmgren averaged 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game for the Thunder.
Joining Wembanyama and Holmgren on the All-Rookie First Team were Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller, Miami Heat forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski. Miller was third in rookie voting but only appeared on 98 ballots, while Jaquez and Podziemski finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II, Houston Rockets wing Amen Thompson, Utah Jazz guard Keyonte George, Thunder wing Cason Wallace, and Memphis Grizzlies wing GG Jackson II made the All-Rookie Second Team. Jackson was the only member of either team not drafted in the first round.
Portland Trail Blazers guard Scoot Henderson led all rookies in assists-per-game (5.4) but did not make an All-Rookie team.
Wembanyama, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is a likely first-team All-Defense player and possibly an All-NBA selection as well. If he makes either or both teams, he would be the first rookie to do so since Tim Duncan in 1998 and David Robinson in 1990.
Only five rookies have made All-Defense: Duncan, Robinson, Washington's Manute Bol (1986), Houston's Hakeem Olajuwon (1985), and Milwaukee's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1970).
If Wembanyama makes All-NBA, he would be the 22nd rookie in NBA history to do so. Of those, only four have done it in the last 45 seasons: Duncan, Robinson, Chicago's Michael Jordan (1985), and Boston's Larry Bird (1980).
Steve Nash, a two-time NBA MVP and Santa Clara University alum, congratulated Podziemski for his All-Rookie honors. Podziemski transferred from Illinois to Santa Clara University and was selected No. 19 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Warriors.
