Three Members of The Nelons Gospel Quartet Among Seven Killed in Wyoming Plane Crash

Three members of the renowned gospel quartet, The Nelons, were among seven people killed in a tragic plane crash that occurred on July 27, 2024. The incident took place in Campbell County, Wyoming. According to reports from various sources,

Kelly Nelon Clark, her husband Jason Clark, and their daughter Amber Nelon Kistler were identified as the victims from The Nelons group. Autumn Nelon Streetman, another member of the quartet and Kelly's daughter, was not aboard the aircraft.

The plane in question was a single-engine turboprop Pilatus PC-12/47E. It is believed that an autopilot issue during flight may have contributed to the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the incident.

Larry Haynie, who was also on board and served as chairman of the Georgia Department of Corrections, was identified by Governor Brian Kemp in a statement as having passed away in the crash. Melodi Hodges, an assistant for The Nelons; Nathan Kistler, Amber's husband; and Larry and Melissa Haynie were also among those who lost their lives.

The Nelons had been traveling to join the Gaither Homecoming Cruise to Alaska when the tragedy occurred. The group has recorded over 35 albums and amassed numerous accolades, including ten GMA Dove Awards and a Grammy nomination for best Southern gospel album in 1991.

The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report on the crash within about 30 days, with a final report detailing the probable cause taking up to two years to complete.

The article contains an appeal to authority fallacy when Dan Gryder's opinion is presented as fact without any evidence or qualification. However, the article does not contain any dichotomous depictions or inflammatory rhetoric. The score is reduced due to the presence of this fallacy but remains high because the article provides valuable information about the plane crash and its potential cause.
    • Dan Gryder suggested that such extreme movements at 300 mph could have caused the plane to break apart mid-air.
    • The force of the plan could have sparked a 'domino effect' with parts of the plane breaking off while still airborne, Gryder said, leaving passengers to endure every minute of the violent descent until impact.

The article reports an autopilot malfunction as a potential cause of the crash without providing any evidence to support this claim. The author also implies that the autopilot system may have been manufactured by one of several other companies, but does not disclose which company or companies these might be. Furthermore, while the article mentions that violent pitching up and down occurred before the plane crashed, it does not establish whether this was a direct result of an autopilot malfunction.
    • The plane reported an “autopilot issue during flight.”
  • Fallacies (90%)
The article contains an appeal to authority and a potential false cause fallacy. It heavily relies on the opinion of Dan Gryder, a pilot who investigates aircraft incidents and crashes, without providing any counter-opinions or expert views. Additionally, the article suggests that the autopilot system may have caused the crash based on preliminary information but does not establish a definitive link between the malfunction and the crash. The rest of the article is mostly factual reporting without fallacies.
    • National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway said in a Saturday statement that preliminary information shows the plane went down after reporting an “autopilot issue during flight.”
    • Dan Gryder, a pilot who investigates aircraft incidents and crashes... told Cowboy State Daily he doesn’t know the exact cause of the crash, but based on the information the plane relayed before it went down, reported by Flight Aware, frantic whipping up and down at 300 mph would have caused the plane to break apart.
    • The Pilatus is a good plane, he said, but any one of four or five other companies could have manufactured the autopilot system...
