Newly Discovered Abelisaurid Dinosaur Koleken Inakayali Distinguished by Unique Skull Traits from Carnotaurus Sastrei in Patagonia's La Colonia Formation
A new genus and species of abelisaurid dinosaur, Koleken inakayali, was identified from fossilized remains found in Patagonia, Argentina.
Koleken inakayali has unique skull traits that distinguish it from all known theropods, particularly Carnotaurus sastrei.
Koleken inakayali lived during the Cretaceous period around 69 million years ago and is known from several skull bones, almost complete hind limbs, and other skeletal elements.
The discovery indicates that abelisaurid dinosaurs were more diverse than previously thought.
The fossils were found in the La Colonia Formation at Cerro Bayo Norte area, east of Sierra de La Colonia in Chubut Province.
A new genus and species of furileusaurian abelisaurid, named Koleken inakayali, was identified from fossilized skeletal remains found in Patagonia, Argentina. Koleken inakayali lived during the Cretaceous period, around 69 million years ago (Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous epoch). This species belonged to Furileusauria, a group of derived abelisaurid dinosaurs known from South America. Koleken inakayali is known from several skull bones, almost complete hind limbs, and other skeletal elements. The fossils were found in the La Colonia Formation at the Cerro Bayo Norte area, east of the Sierra de La Colonia, center north of Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina. The holotype is composed of a partial skeleton, including cranial, axial and appendicular elements, with a unique set of characters that distinguish it from all known theropods. In particular, Koleken inakayali shows several anatomical traits, especially in the skull bones, that differentiate it from Carnotaurus sastrei, the only other abelisaurid known from the La Colonia Formation. The discovery indicates that abelisaurid dinosaurs were more diverse than previously thought. We analyzed the evolutionary relationships between abelisaurids and and their closest relatives, noasaurids (family Noasauridae), and found periods of time in which these groups changed rapidly, and other periods in which their evolution remained almost on pause. The team's paper was published in the journal Cladistics.

A newly discovered dinosaur named Koleken inakayali roamed Patagonia 70 million years ago and had even smaller arms than T.Rex.
The name Koleken inakayali derives from Tehuelche language, referring to the claystone and Tehuelche leader Inakayal.
Koleken inakayali is smaller than Carnotaurus sastrei and lacks massive frontal horns.

The author makes several statements about the newly discovered dinosaur Koleken inakayali and its short arms, which is a valid observation. However, the author also repeats this statement multiple times without providing new information each time. This repetition can be considered an informal fallacy of redundancy. Additionally, the author makes statements about theories regarding why dinosaurs had short arms without explicitly stating where these theories come from or who holds them, which could be considered an appeal to unnamed experts or a hasty generalization.

Koleken resembles the iconic 'meat bull' Carnotaurus sastrei, the only other abelisaurid known from the La Colonia Formation, which was popularised in the film Jurassic World. However, unlike Carnotaurus, Kotleken is smaller in size and exhibits a unique set of skull features and anatomical differences - most notably, the absence of the massive frontal horns possessed by Carnotaurs.
