The New England Patriots added another weapon to their offense in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting UCF wide receiver Javon Baker. Baker, who led the Big 12 in receiving yards (1,139) last season, is looking forward to working with quarterback Drake Maye and fellow wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk.
Baker transferred from Alabama to UCF and broke out as a junior, racking up 56 receptions for 796 yards and five touchdowns over 14 games. He took it to the next level in his final season, totaling 52 catches for 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns.
Despite being slightly slower than some other receivers in the draft class, Baker's ability to catch any ball thrown his way and his vertical threat make him an intriguing addition to the Patriots offense. He averaged 21.9 yards per catch last season, leading the conference and putting him second in the nation.
Baker has expressed excitement about working with Maye, who he previously worked out with when Maye was committed to Alabama. The two have a connection going on, and Baker believes that Maye is the best quarterback in this draft.
The Patriots now have 11 wide receivers under contract, but only a handful of them can be considered locks to make the roster. Baker's ability to win downfield and stretch the field will give him an edge in making the team.
