Eliot Wolf Favored for New England Patriots Top Football Executive Role Amidst Rooney Rule Delay

The New England Patriots are in the process of searching for a new top football executive, with Eliot Wolf, the current director of scouting, being considered a heavy favorite for the position. Wolf has been running the football operation since Bill Belichick's departure and made key decisions such as drafting UNC quarterback Drake Maye during this offseason. However, New England has yet to officially give him the job due to not having satisfied the Rooney Rule, which requires two in-person interviews with external candidates. The Patriots have met with Brandon Hunt, the Eagles director of scouting and former Steelers pro scouting coordinator, but no decision has been made yet.

Eliot Wolf's background includes working for the Green Bay Packers from 2004-17, ascending the front-office ranks to become the director of football operations in 2016. He then became Cleveland Browns' assistant general manager from 2018-19.

Two other potential candidates, Quentin Harris and Terrance Gray, have turned down interview requests from the Patriots. Harris spent 16 years in the Cardinals' scouting department and was most recently their vice president of player personnel before being let go in February. Gray joined the Buffalo Bills in 2017 and has served various roles including director of college scouting, assistant director of player personnel, and currently as director of player personnel.
