New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson has agreed to a four-year, $36 million extension with the team. The deal includes $17 million guaranteed and keeps Stevenson under contract through 2028.
Stevenson, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has totaled 2,265 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in his career with the Patriots. In his best season to date, he generated 1,040 rushing yards and 421 receiving yards.
The extension comes after Stevenson expressed confidence that a deal was close during mandatory minicamp earlier this month. The Patriots have prioritized retaining internal talent under new executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf and coach Jerod Mayo, who both joined the team in their current positions last year.
Stevenson's ability to excel as both a runner and receiver makes him a valuable three-down weapon for the Patriots offense. He is expected to have a larger role this season following the signing of Antonio Gibson, who will primarily focus on pass-catching duties.
To prepare for his increased workload, Stevenson has been focusing on improving his nutrition and reducing body fat percentage. He has also been studying film of Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb to better understand new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt's run-heavy offense.
The Patriots have now extended several key players this offseason, including defensive tackle Christian Barmore, center David Andrews, and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. The team is expected to make additional roster moves in the coming weeks.
