Residents were advised to evacuate to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, which is a six-hour drive away. An evacuation alert was also issued for the neighboring community of Wabush. The Labrador West Health Centre in Labrador City was temporarily closed due to the wildfire.

Last year, Canada experienced its worst fire season in history with over 18.5 million hectares burned and fires raging simultaneously in both the east and west of the country. This year, there are currently 575 active fires in Canada, with over 400 considered out of control.

The cause of the wildfire is unknown at this time. The provincial fire service is working to contain it along with assistance from other provinces and the federal government.
