London-based tech company, Nothing, is set to release a new messaging app, Nothing Chats, which will allow Android users to send iMessages to iPhone users. The app, currently in its beta phase, is expected to be available for download from Google's Play Store for owners of the company's Phone (2) devices. The app is powered by Sunbird, an unofficial iMessage client, and will require users to log in with their Apple ID.
The app will support individual and group chats, typing indicators, full-size media sharing, and voice notes. However, it has some limitations, including the inability to edit sent messages and incomplete functionality for 'Tapbacks'. Features like read receipts, message reactions, and replies are expected to be added later. The app will also support other messaging apps, such as SMS, WhatsApp, and RCS.
The service works by connecting users' iCloud account to the app, which is run through a virtual Mac Mini. However, experts have raised concerns that this may weaken data security. Despite these concerns, all messages will be end-to-end encrypted for user data safety and security.
The app is expected to be available in North America, the EU, and other European countries. The European Commission is currently considering whether iMessage should be required to be compatible with other messaging apps under the European Union's Digital Markets Act.
