OG Anunoby, a premier perimeter defender and quality 3-point shooter, has agreed to a five-year, $212.5 million contract to return to the New York Knicks.
Anunoby was acquired by the Knicks in January 2024 through a trade that sent RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley to the Toronto Raptors. In his short tenure with New York, Anunoby helped lead the team to a 12-2 record in the 14 games he played before both he and Julius Randle suffered injuries against the Miami Heat.
Anunoby averaged 14.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in his combined efforts for the Knicks and Raptors during the regular season, making him a valuable addition to New York's roster.
The Knicks went on to have a successful postseason run, with Anunoby contributing significantly despite being injured for much of it. The team finished the regular season and playoffs with a combined record of 27-6 in the games he played for them.
Anunoby's return to the Knicks is expected to bolster their defensive capabilities and provide additional scoring options, making them a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference next season.
Despite his impressive performance on the court, Anunoby has an extensive injury history, missing over 70 games since his rookie campaign. He missed 27 games with the Knicks last season due to elbow surgery and strained his hamstring in the playoffs.
The Knicks' acquisition of Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night is also expected to strengthen their lineup, as both Anunoby and Bridges are known for their defensive prowess.
