According to multiple sources, including the Columbus Division of Police and local news outlets, Stakely had just returned to her vehicle when she saw it being stolen. She reacted quickly, throwing herself on the hood of the car in an attempt to stop it. However, she was thrown off and suffered fatal injuries when her head hit the pavement.
The abandoned Honda SUV was later found a short distance away from the crime scene with Stakely's son unharmed inside.
