Olivia Munn's Cancer Battle: A Journey of Survival and Motherhood
Olivia Munn, a renowned actress known for her roles in X-Men: Apocalypse and The Newsroom, recently shared her personal experience with breast cancer in an exclusive interview with Vogue.
Munn was diagnosed with aggressive luminal B breast cancer in both of her breasts. She uses the term 'aggressive' to describe her cancer experience, which is reflected in doctors' assessments. Munn has been partnered with comedian John Mulaney since 2021 and they have a two-year-old son named Malcolm.
The actress underwent a series of surgeries as part of her treatment, including a double mastectomy, lymph node dissection, reconstructive breast surgery, nipple delay, and ultimately a hysterectomy in April 2023. Munn made the decision to undergo the hysterectomy due to debilitating exhaustion from Lupron medication.
Before her diagnosis, Munn froze her eggs twice previously at age 33 and 39. The latest egg retrieval resulted in two healthy embryos. However, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, she had to make a difficult decision regarding her treatment and the possibility of having more children.
Munn's doctors informed her that hormone therapy could be necessary to prevent cancer recurrence but would require taking Lupron medication, which comes with debilitating side effects. Alternatively, she could undergo a full hysterectomy to remove the source of the hormones and be present for her family.
Munn shared her thoughts on this decision in an interview with Vogue:
