A shooting attack at a Shiite mosque in Muscat, Oman on July 15, 2024, left at least six people dead and dozens wounded. The incident occurred during the observance of Ashura, a major religious event for Shia Muslims commemorating the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Hussein. Two Pakistani nationals were among those killed in the shooting according to Pakistan's government.
The Royal Oman Police reported that three gunmen were killed by police officers after they opened fire at the Imam Bargah Ali bin Abu Talib mosque in Wadi Kabir, Muscat. Five civilians and one responding officer were also killed, and 28 others, including other first responders of various nationalities, were wounded.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those affected.
Such violence is rare in Oman, a stable country on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula known for its neutrality in regional disputes.
The U.S. Embassy in Muscat issued a warning for Americans to stay away from the area and canceled all visa appointments for Tuesday at the embassy.
