Paradise, California: A Town Rebuilt Amidst Extreme Weather Risks

Five years after the devastating Camp Fire ravaged Paradise, California, leaving 85 people dead and nearly 20,000 homes and businesses destroyed, the town is slowly rebuilding. However, residents are finding that relocating did not necessarily mean escaping extreme weather risks.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 2.5 million Americans were forced from their homes due to extreme weather last year. Realtor.com research released in March found that 44% of all American homes are threatened by climate change. Paradise residents Justin and Ryan Miller shared their experiences with CBS News reporter Jonathan Vigliotti.

Justin Miller, who lost his childhood home in the Camp Fire, chose to relocate to nearby Oroville. He initially thought he could rebuild on his property but soon realized that the town would take a long time to recover. Ryan Miller, Justin's older brother and a Ph.D. candidate in geography studying climate migration, used postal records to track where people moved after the Camp Fire. He found that many households moved into areas also threatened by other kinds of disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
