Phillies recall Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley
Weston Wilson named International League Player of the Week on July 1, 2024
Whit Merrifield released by Phillies after disappointing performance and $8 million contract
Wilson can play multiple positions in the infield and outfield
The Philadelphia Phillies made a roster move on July 13, 2024, by recalling infielder Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and releasing utility player Whit Merrifield. The team signed Wilson as a free agent in January 2023 and he made his season debut with the Phillies on June 9 against the New York Mets at London Stadium. In his brief tenure with the team, Wilson was named International League Player of the Week on July 1. Merrifield, who signed an $8 million contract during the offseason, had a disappointing performance for the Phillies. He appeared in 53 games and made 20 starts across various positions but batted only .199 with 11 RBIs and 21 runs scored in 174 plate appearances. Despite his poor performance, Merrifield was expected to remain on the team throughout the season due to his contract. However, the Phillies decided to release him three games before the All-Star break.
Wilson will take Merrifield's place on the roster and is expected to contribute with his solid hitting and defensive versatility. The Phillies currently have a stacked roster, but depth is always important for a contending team. Wilson's addition provides that depth as he can play multiple positions in the infield and outfield.
The Phillies have released veteran infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield.
Merrifield signed a one-year, $8MM contract with the Phillies in free agency this past offseason.
He is still owed about $3.01MM of his salary plus a $1MM buyout for the 2025 campaign.
In his career up until last season, Merrifield had a decent hitting record with a .272/.318/.382 slash line and 11 homers in Toronto.
Despite a decline in performance, Merrifield’s line-drive rate is still at 16.8% of his batted balls this season, and he has excellent defensive versatility as he can play second base, third base and all around the outfield.

The Phillies will remain on the hook for the majority of his remaining contract despite releasing him.
