A heat wave is affecting Pittsburgh and other communities in the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States. The heat index numbers are expected to reach well into the triple digits, with some areas experiencing temperatures as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Several communities and community groups are opening cooling centers for people without air conditioning to help them stay cool during this extreme heat event.
In Pittsburgh, the City has activated six healthy active living centers as cooling centers from Monday through Friday, hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Wednesday when hours are noon to 7 p.m.

Those in need of assistance can call the dispatch center at 412-833-2000 for help. The Community House Church is also open Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has activated the city's heat emergency plan due to the extreme temperatures expected in the coming days.
The National Weather Service has warned that this heat wave could last for several days and may set new temperature records in many cities across the Midwest and Northeast. It is important for everyone, especially vulnerable populations such as older adults, young children, and those with chronic health conditions to take precautions to stay cool during this time.
