In a surprising turn of events, two winning tickets for the $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot were sold to a group of individuals in Portland, Oregon. The winners, Cheng 'Charlie' Saephan and his wife Duanpen, along with their friend Laiza Chao, came forward to claim their prize on Monday at the Oregon Lottery headquarters.
Saephan, a 46-year-old immigrant from Laos who has been battling cancer for eight years, shared that he had undergone chemotherapy treatment just one week prior to winning the lottery. He and his wife decided to split the winnings with Chao, who contributed $100 towards purchasing the tickets.
The winning numbers, 22, 27, 44, 52, and 69 with a red Powerball of 9 were drawn on April 6. The group opted for the lump sum payment of $422 million after taxes.
Saephan was born in Laos and immigrated to the US in 1994. He worked as a machinist for an aerospace company before his cancer diagnosis. In the weeks leading up to the drawing, he wrote out numbers for the game on a piece of paper and slept with it under his pillow, praying for good fortune.
The winning ticket was sold at Plaid Pantry convenience store in Portland. Under Oregon law, lottery winners cannot remain anonymous and have one year to claim their prize.
This is the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in history and the eighth largest among all U.S. jackpot games, according to the Oregon Lottery.
The biggest U.S. lottery jackpot won was $2.04 billion in California in 2022.
