More than 2,400 patients in Oregon and Southwest Washington may have been exposed to infectious diseases including Hepatitis B, C, and HIV due to a physician's potential failure to follow infection control practices between 2017 and 2023.
The exact ways the infection control practices were not followed were not disclosed. However, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), standard protocols include use of double gloves, disinfecting high-touch surfaces on anesthesia machines, and using syringes and vials for only one patient.
The physician in question worked at several hospitals including Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center in Oregon City, Providence Portland Medical Center, and Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham.
Providence Health & Services stated that approximately 2,200 patients from Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center and two patients from Providence Portland Medical Center were affected. Legacy Health reported that 221 patients at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center may have been exposed.
The physician was employed by Oregon Anesthesiology Group (OAG) and has since been terminated. OAG no longer provides services to the hospitals involved.
Patients are being notified of potential exposure and encouraged to get a free blood test to screen for the infections. If a patient tests positive, Providence Health & Services will reach out to discuss next steps.
The safety of patients is a top priority for all healthcare providers involved. New protocols and procedures have been put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
