The event came after calls for Biden to step aside as a candidate due to his performance in the previous debate. During the rally, Biden addressed these concerns and reiterated his plans to remain in the race. He championed various issues including abortion rights, economic numbers, civil rights, labor unions, and plans to ban assault weapons. The president also warned against returning Donald Trump to the White House and criticized him for instigating the Capitol breach and facing legal challenges. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson spoke before Biden's arrival. At another point in the day, Biden visited the Garage restaurant in Northville.
At a separate event in Detroit, President Biden attacked former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally. He referred to Trump as his 2024 presidential race competitor.
