Former President Donald Trump's call for Secret Service protection for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. following the attempted assassination of Trump on July 15, 2024, was granted by President Joe Biden on Monday, July 15. The shooting incident at a rally in western Pennsylvania left one person dead and at least two others critically wounded.
Trump had urged for Kennedy to receive protection due to the history of the Kennedy family and their connection to assassinations. Kennedy's father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in June 1968, and his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in November 1963.
The Secret Service had previously denied requests for protection from the independent presidential candidate.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the decision to provide protection to Kennedy during a White House briefing on Monday. The agency also made adjustments to the security provided to President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Trump in response to the heightened threat environment.
An independent review of the shooting will examine Secret Service and other law enforcement actions before, during, and after the incident. The investigation is expected to be up and running within days.
Trump survived the assassination attempt with minor injuries. The shooter was killed by Secret Service agents on the scene.
