President Joe Biden Announces Ceasefire Proposal Between Israel and Hamas in Gaza
On June 4, 2024, President Joe Biden announced a proposed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The proposal came after weeks of intense conflict between the two parties, resulting in significant damage to infrastructure and loss of life.
Israel's Proposal for an Enduring Ceasefire
According to reports, Israel had submitted a comprehensive new proposal for an enduring ceasefire to the peace talks in Cairo. Biden publicly disclosed and endorsed Israel's proposal, sharing the stakes and risks of its success or failure.
The Proposed Ceasefire Phases
Phase 1 of Biden's proposed ceasefire includes a complete ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli troops from all populated areas in Gaza, return of Gazan citizens to their homes, rollout of humanitarian aid, and release of hostages including women, the elderly, and the wounded.
In Phase 2 of Biden's proposed ceasefire all remaining hostages would be released and a temporary cease-fire would become permanent. Reconstruction of Gaza would commence in Phase 3.
Israel's Acceptance of the Ceasefire Proposal
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that Israel had accepted the ceasefire proposal, with the ball now in Hamas' court to respond.
Skepticism and Frustration from Gazans
Despite cautious optimism among some Gazans, many remain skeptical of the proposed ceasefire due to past failed attempts. Ayman Skeik, a 31-year-old merchant from Gaza City, expressed frustration with the US's role as Israel's ally and questioned its commitment to bringing an end to the war.
The Human Toll of the Conflict
As of June 5, 2024, the official death toll in Gaza had surpassed 36,500 with over 82,000 injuries. At least 15,000 Palestinian children have been killed since October 7.
The U.N.'s Role in Supporting the Ceasefire
The United Nations Security Council is currently considering a resolution in support of the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal outlined by President Biden.
