Rare White Leucistic Alligator Born at Florida Park

A white leucistic alligator, an extremely rare genetic variation, has been born at Gatorland in Orlando, Florida. This female alligator, weighing 96 grams and measuring 19.2 inches, is the first of its kind to be born in human care and is one of only a handful known to exist worldwide.

Leucistic alligators are characterized by their white coloration with patches of normal coloration, distinguishing them from albino alligators which have a complete loss of pigment. This particular alligator is also noted for its bright blue eyes, a characteristic feature of leucistic alligators.

The birth of this alligator is significant as it is the first solid-white alligator ever recorded from the original leucistic alligators discovered in Louisiana 36 years ago. This discovery adds to the thriving population of American alligators, estimated to be around 5 million individuals.

Gatorland, the home of this rare alligator, is seeking the public's assistance in naming the new addition. Visitors to the park will have the opportunity to see the alligator and participate in the naming process.
