The 2024 Tony Award nominations were announced on April 30, with Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jesse Tyler Ferguson revealing the list of nominees. Two productions led the way with a record-breaking number of nominations: Stereophonic, a play by David Adjmi featuring music by Will Butler, received 13 nominations in both musical and play categories; and Alicia Keys' musical Hell's Kitchen earned the same number of nods. The Outsiders, an adaptation of S.E. Hinton's classic young adult novel, followed closely with 12 nominations.
Stereophonic tells the story of a group of musicians struggling to record an album inside a recording studio, and its actors received individual nominations for their performances: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Juliana Canfield, Sarah Pidgeon, and Tom Pecinka. Former Elphabas Eden Espinosa, Shoshana Bean, and Lindsay Mendez also earned nominations for their roles in various productions.
Four of the five nominees for Best Direction of a Musical are women: Maria Friedman for her revival of Merrily We Roll Along; Amy Herzog for both Mary Jane and An Enemy of the People; Rachel Chavkin for The Inheritance; and Lileana Blain-Cruz for A Strange Loop. Three of the five nominees for Best Direction of a Play are also women: Rebecca Taichman for Weldon's Heartbreak House; Mariama Diallo for The Revisionist; and Kate Whoriskey for An Enemy of the People.
Isabella Byrd received two nominations, one each for lighting design in An Enemy of the People and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Natasha Katz also earned two nominations, this time for lighting design in Grey House and The Inheritance. Dede Ayite was recognized with three nominations: for costume design in Appropriate, Jaja's African Hair Braiding, and Hell's Kitchen.
Tom Scutt received two separate nominations for his work on Cabaret: costume design and scenic design. Amy Herzog is up for two awards as well: Best Play for Mary Jane and Best Revival of a Play for An Enemy of the People.
