Record-Breaking Travel Volumes: 71 Million People to Hit the Roads and Skies for Fourth of July, AAA Predicts

Record numbers of travelers are hitting the roads and skies this Fourth of July holiday, with approximately 71 million people expected to travel between June 29 and July 8. This represents a 5% increase from last year and an 8% increase from 2019.

AAA predicts that around 60.6 million people will travel by car during this period, representing a rise of nearly three million compared to the same time in the previous year. More than 32 million people are expected to pass through America's airports between June 29 and July 8, an increase of over five million people from last year.

Lower-than-average prices for domestic airfare contribute to a surge in flyers compared to this time last year. Domestic airfare is currently averaging $800 per round trip, which is 2% cheaper than the same period in 2023.

However, with record numbers of people traveling, there will be heavy traffic and delays on the roads and at the airports. INRIX recommends that travelers avoid hitting the road between Wednesday, July 3 and Sunday, July 8 during peak hours (between 1 pm and 7 pm) to minimize delays.

Despite higher costs and a more volatile industry, Paula Twidale, senior vice president of travel at AAA, states that travel volumes are still growing. In an American Express Travel survey, over three quarters of people valued the best travel experience over cost.
