PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil — Massive flooding in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has left at least 133 people dead and over 460,000 displaced as of May 8, according to various sources. The disaster began last week when heavy rains caused rivers and streams to overflow, submerging entire neighborhoods in water. Among the hardest-hit cities are Porto Alegre, Canoas, Eldorado do Sul, and Moinhos de Venta.
One of those affected was meteorologist Estael Sias from Porto Alegre. She recalled how she and her family had to leave their home in Canoas just hours before the water reached them.
