Robert Downey Jr. is making a shocking return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after his character Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, died in Avengers: Endgame. This time, he will be portraying the iconic villain Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, in two upcoming MCU films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo brothers announced this surprise casting at Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 28, 2024.
Downey Jr.'s career was revitalized by his portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man and other MCU projects. His return as Doctor Doom marks a significant shift for the actor and adds an intriguing twist to the MCU's ongoing narrative. The Russo brothers will be directing both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Marvel officially dropped Kang actor Jonathan Majors following his conviction and sentencing for domestic abuse and assault in December 2023, paving the way for Downey Jr.'s return as a central villain. The new Fantastic Four, long-time rivals of Doctor Doom, will also be appearing in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is slated for about a year later, on May 7, 2027.
Fans and critics alike were taken aback by this announcement. Some expressed excitement at the prospect of Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU in such a significant role, while others questioned whether this was a creative decision or simply a desperate attempt to fill the void left by Tony Stark's death.
Marvel Studios also announced new releases at Comic-Con 2024, including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. These projects will feature returning MCU veterans and newcomers alike.
