In a shocking turn of events at Marvel's Comic-Con presentation on July 28, 2024, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Universe as the classic villain Doctor Doom in two upcoming Avengers movies: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are set to direct both films.
Doctor Doom's introduction as the next major threat in the MCU comes after Marvel Studios dropped Jonathan Majors from his role as Kang due to his conviction for domestic assault. Downey, who had previously expressed interest in returning to Marvel, will be reprising a role that first brought him international fame with 2008's Iron Man.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in May 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is set for May 2027. Both films are based on Marvel comics and will feature a multitude of heroes and villains from the Marvel Universe.
The Russo Brothers, who previously directed Downey in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, expressed their excitement about working with Downey once again. They stated that to do Secret Wars justice, they needed the greatest actor in the world to play Victor Von Doom.
Downey's return as Doctor Doom marks a significant moment for Marvel fans as he is one of the most iconic villains in Marvel history. His presence will undoubtedly add an exciting new dynamic to the MCU and set the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars, which promises to be a massive event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
