Mandatory Evacuation Ordered for Ruidoso Due to Growing South Fork and Salt Fires: 5,000 Residents Affected, Evacuation Centers Open

An emergency mandatory evacuation was issued for the entire Village of Ruidoso on June 17, 2024, due to the South Fork Fire. The only available evacuation route is on Sudderth to Highway 70, leading out to Roswell.

The South Fork Fire ignited on Mescalero Apache tribal land and US Forest Service land west of Ruidoso and had grown to at least 5,252 acres by the end of the day. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

An estimated 5,000 residents were ordered to evacuate due to the approaching South Fork Fire. Multiple structures have been destroyed by both fires, though the extent of damage is still unclear.

The Mescalero Apache Tribe opened an evacuation center at their Community Center Gymnasium for residents in need of shelter. PNM de-energized part of Ruidoso at the request of first responders to prevent further damage from electrical fires caused by the blaze.

Evacuation orders were issued for multiple areas, including Chatto Bluff, Apache Summit, Fantasy Lane, homes along Highway 70 from Highway 244 to the east Reservation line, Bear Canyon and Snow Canyon. US 70 was closed from mm 249 to mm 258.

The Salt Fire is also burning on Mescalero Reservation and Otero County, southwest of Ruidoso. The size of the Salt Fire is currently estimated at 2,815 acres with zero percent containment.

Evacuation orders will remain in effect overnight for the affected areas. For those seeking shelter outside of Ruidoso, an Evacuation Center is available at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell gym. Other shelters include Capitan High School, Inn of the Mountain Gods, ENMU-Roswell Gymnasium, Church on the Move, NMMI Godfrey Center and NM Dream Center.

The weather conditions are contributing to the rapid spread of both fires. Temperature is 79 degrees with 11% humidity and winds from the southwest at 18 mph / gusts up to 25 mph. Tonight, a low around 58 is expected with southwest wind decreasing to 10-15 mph after midnight. Tomorrow, sunny conditions with a high near 86 and southwest winds of 10-15 mph are forecasted.

The New Mexico Forestry Division advises residents to stay informed and follow evacuation orders. For updates on the South Fork Fire, visit the Village South Fork Fire Information Hub, Facebook page or tune into 1490 AM.
