In a series of escalating attacks, both Russia and Ukraine have targeted each other's energy sectors, causing significant damage to infrastructure and raising concerns about potential disruptions to energy supplies.
According to reports from multiple sources, including Al Jazeera, PBS NewsHour, The Washington Post, and The Independent UK,
Russia launched a barrage of missiles against Ukraine's energy infrastructure overnight on April 27-28. Four thermal power plants in Ukraine were reportedly damaged in the attacks. In response, Ukraine shot down 21 drones out of a total of 34 that Russia sent towards Ukrainian energy facilities and other infrastructure.
The following day, April 28, Russia renewed its attacks on Ukraine's energy grid. According to reports from The Washington Post and The Independent UK, Russian missiles struck four thermal power plants belonging to Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK. Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko reported an engineer was injured in the attacks.
The European Union could also be affected by these attacks as some gas facilities crucial for EU supply were damaged in the assaults on Ukraine's energy sector.
These incidents mark a significant escalation in tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which have been at odds since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected.
