Russian Cosmonauts Successfully Deploy Communications System and Analyze Corrosion During Spacewalk

Two Russian cosmonauts, Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub, completed a spacewalk outside the International Space Station on April 25, 2024. The spacewalk lasted for four hours and 36 minutes.

The main objectives of the spacewalk were to deploy one panel on a synthetic radar system on the Russian Nauka module and install equipment and experiments on the Poisk module to analyze corrosion levels. This was Kononenko's seventh spacewalk, while it was Chub's second.

Roscosmos reported that the cosmonauts successfully deployed a communications system and corrosion analysis equipment during the spacewalk. The synthetic radar communications system on the Russian segment of the complex is now online and being used to monitor Earth's environment for the first time.

The Poisk mini-research module received new hardware adapters, which will support future spacewalk activities.

Both cosmonauts arrived at the station aboard the Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft on September 15, 2023. They joined NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara as part of Expedition 71.
