In the aftermath of President Joe Biden's State of the Union address, Senator Katie Britt delivered a response that has been met with criticism. The New Abnormal team from The Daily Beast questions whether she thought it through or was set up to fail, citing her whispered and over-the-top delivery as evidence of poor acting skills.
The State of the Union response is widely considered a no-win situation for rising politicians, with past responders such as Bobby Jindal and Blake Masters being criticized for their performances. The New Abnormal team wonders if someone in the room where Britt's response was recorded intentionally set her up to fail.
In addition to criticism of her delivery, Britt has also been accused of making a whopping lie regarding a sex trafficking victim in her address. Talking Point Memo journalist Jonathan M. Katz tracked down the story that Britt referenced and found that it did not take place during Biden's time as president or vice president.
Britt described a woman who was sex trafficked by the cartels starting at age 12, sharing graphic details of her abuse. However, according to Katz's research, this story actually happened in Mexico in the mid-2000s and has been shared publicly by human trafficking survivor Karla Jacinto Romero.
Britt's office did not confirm or deny that she was sharing Jacinto Romero's account but released a statement saying that her story was 100% correct. The Biden Administration's policies have been criticized for empowering the cartels and acting as a magnet to migrants making the dangerous journey to the border, where they are subjected to horrific abuse.
Despite these controversies, Britt has previously referenced this story on Capitol Hill and in social media posts. It is unclear why she chose to use an anecdote from before Biden's time as president in her response to his State of the Union address.
