The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for northern Illinois earlier in the day and predicted temperatures reaching 90 degrees or above each day from Monday through Wednesday with potential heat indices close to triple digits.
The storm caused a canopy at a Mobil gas station on Meridian Road near U.S. 20 to collapse, but no injuries were reported.
The storms caused power outages throughout Rockford, leaving hundreds of homes without electricity.

According to multiple reports, a canopy at the gas station collapsed during the storm. No injuries were reported as a result of the collapse.

The agency has issued a Heat Risk warning for the region on Monday, indicating that this level of heat affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. By Tuesday, the Heat Risk warning turns to purple, indicating rare and/or long-duration extreme heat with little to no overnight relief.
The storms also caused power outages throughout Rockford, leaving hundreds of homes without electricity as of late night Sunday.
