The singer was accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros in taxes between 2012 and 2014. As part of the settlement, Shakira has accepted the charges and agreed to pay a fine of over 7.3 million euros. In addition, she has accepted another fine of 438,000 euros to avoid a potential three-year prison sentence.
The case hinged on Shakira's place of residence during the period in question. Spanish authorities alleged that Shakira had spent more than half of that period in Spain and should have paid taxes on her worldwide income in the country. However, Shakira's defense team argued that she had not spent more than 60 days a year inside Spain during the period in question.
In July 2022, Shakira turned down a deal offered by the prosecutors. She had previously stated that she had already paid all that she owed and an additional 3 million euros in interest. Shakira, who also has a second tax fraud investigation pending with Spanish authorities, had previously vowed to fight what she called false accusations. However, she said the decision to resolve the case before trial was made with the best interest of her children at heart.
