FORT WORTH, Texas – Simone Biles is dominating the US gymnastics championships with a commanding lead after the first day of competition. The Olympic gold medalist and reigning world all-around champion scored a total of 60.450 points, three full points ahead of her closest competitor Skye Blakely.
Biles' impressive performance was highlighted by her highest single scores on each of the four apparatuses: vault (15.800), uneven bars (14.650), balance beam (14.800), and floor exercise (15.200).
Blakely, who finished second with a score of 57.050, also had a strong showing on vault with a massive 15.0-point score for her first rotation.
The US championships are the final stop before the Olympic Trials in Minneapolis later this month and will determine the US titles and National Team spots for artistic gymnastics.
Gabby Douglas, another Olympic gold medalist, withdrew from the event due to an ankle injury but left open the possibility of competing in future Olympics.
The competition continues on Sunday with the second half of competition. The U.S. men also returned to domestic competition since the Winter Cup in February.
The 2024 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships will determine the US titles and National Team spots for artistic gymnastics.
Gabby Douglas (2012), Simone Biles (2016) and Suni Lee (2020) will compete together in the women’s field.
There are 26 athletes competing who have previously competed at the Olympics, World Championships and/or Pan American Games, accounting for a total of 119 medals.
Gabrielle Hardie and Claire Pease are among the junior athletes aiming for national titles.
The U.S. men return to domestic competition since the Winter Cup in February.
Sumanasekera opened vault with a solid DTY, scoring 14.250.
Roberson took her Cheng to her feet and scored 14.000 on vault.
Kailya Lincoln had hesitations on her opening low bar pirouettes but completed the rest of her routine, scoring a double tuck dismount with a step back.
Simone Biles looked confident during training, adding a Cheng vault to her programme.
Suni Lee will make her return to the all-around competition after not competing on all four apparatus since February 2023 and plans to add uneven bars at the U.S. championships.
Shilese Jones aims to improve for trials and is dealing with a sore shoulder.
