MINNEAPOLIS — The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will feature a historic U.S. women's gymnastics team, with Simone Biles leading the way as the oldest American female gymnast to compete at the Olympics since the 1950s. Biles secured her spot on the team by finishing first in both days of competition at the US Olympic Gymnastics Trials in Minneapolis.
Biles, who married Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens in 2023, finished more than five points ahead of the field with a two-day all-around score of 117.225. She will be joined by Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera.
Lee won the uneven bars title at the trials with a newly upgraded routine and tied Biles for the two-day average on the balance beam. Rivera was surprised to make the team after tying Biles in their final rotation on beam.
The Paris Olympics will mark a redemption tour for Team USA, who finished second at Tokyo 2021 with five individual medals but no team medal. Biles, Lee, Carey, and Chiles were all part of that team and are determined to bring home the gold this time around.
Biles wowed fans during her floor routine at the trials by jumping a reported 12 feet into the air. Her leap set social media ablaze with comparisons to religious art and memes.
The U.S. men's team was also named, with Fred Richard and Brody Malone leading the squad.
The Paris Olympics are scheduled to begin on July 26, 2024, and will be streamed live on Peacock.
