USA Gymnastics, the National Governing Body for gymnastics in the United States, has announced its 2024 Men's Olympic Team. The upcoming Paris Olympics will see Simone Biles leading a strong US team after her impressive performance at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Minneapolis.
Biles secured her spot on the team with a two-day all-around score of 117.225, more than five points ahead of her closest competitor. She finished with a standing ovation from the crowd and expressed her determination to make up for her experience at the Tokyo Olympics, where she withdrew due to mental health issues.
Joining Biles on the team are Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera. The five-member teams will compete in all four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. Each country can have up to three individual spots if they don't win a team quota.
Unfortunately, Shilese Jones suffered an injury on the vault during trials and will not be able to compete in the Paris Olympics. She was a near-lock for the Olympic team after winning six world championship medals in the past two years. Jones had also lost her father earlier that year, who had encouraged her to try once more for an Olympic berth.
The US women's gymnastics team dominated much of their competition at the Tokyo Olympics, earning gold medals in the all-around and floor exercise events as well as a silver medal in the team category. However, Biles' withdrawal from most events left a significant impact on Team USA's performance.
Biles and Lee both see their trip to Paris as an opportunity for redemption, with largely the same team present from Tokyo. The Paris Olympics are set to begin on July 26.
