South African lawmakers have voted in favor of a motion to suspend all diplomatic relations with Israel and close the Israeli embassy in Pretoria. The move comes amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, with the South African parliament demanding a ceasefire before diplomatic ties can be restored. The motion was tabled by the opposition party, Economic Freedom Fighters, and received backing from the ruling African National Congress. The resolution was passed with the support of 248 parliament members, while 91 opposed it.

However, the implementation of this resolution lies in the hands of President Cyril Ramaphosa's government, making the move largely symbolic at this stage. This development follows Israel's decision to recall its ambassador to South Africa, Eliav Belotserkovsky, back to Jerusalem for consultations.

In a separate but related move, South Africa has referred Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for a war crimes investigation. The South African government has labeled the situation in Gaza as 'genocide' and has called for an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The measures will remain in place until Israel agrees to a ceasefire and participates in peace negotiations.
