SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – A 16-year-old boy accused of stabbing two Christian clerics during a Sydney church service on April 15, 2024, has been charged with terrorism offenses. The incident occurred at the Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Sydney's western suburbs during an Assyrian Orthodox service that was being streamed online. According to reports, the teen spoke in Arabic about the Prophet Muhammad being insulted after committing the crime.
The bishop and priest, identified as Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and Rev. Isaac Royel respectively, were both injured during the attack but are reportedly recovering well. The boy was later overpowered by parishioners and sustained severe hand injuries. He is currently in a hospital under police guard.
The Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw announced the charges on April 19, 2024, stating that the stabbing was declared a terrorist act due to the teenager's suspected religious motivation and travel from his home to the church. The offense carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for life.
The teen has a history of knife-related offenses and had seen three psychologists, a school counselor, and had an appointment with a psychiatrist. His family reported that he might have 'anger management and behavioral issues' but showed no signs of radicalization.
The magistrate made a recommendation for the boy to have a mental health assessment while in custody. He will enter remand custody at a children's detention center once released from the hospital, until his next court hearing on June 14.
A crowd of up to 600 people converged on the church after the attack, some demanding that police hand over the boy. Hours of rioting led to 51 police officers being injured. Sydney mosques also received firebomb threats.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for calm and forgiveness following the attack, releasing an audio statement saying, 'The Lord Jesus never said go out and fight in the street, never said to retaliate, but to pray. And this is what I'm asking everyone to do.' The bishop also released a statement forgiving his attacker.
Police are continuing to hunt for as many as 50 people involved in the riot and expect to make more arrests in the coming days.
