Target, the Minneapolis-based retail giant, has announced a new initiative aimed at reducing textile waste and offering customers a discount on denim purchases. The Denim Take Back Event will run from August 4-10 and allows customers to bring in up to five denim items of any brand and condition to participating Target stores. In exchange, they will receive a Target Circle promo code for a 20% discount on new denim apparel purchases.

The used denim items will be recycled into new products such as insulation, packaging, and appliances. Textile waste is a growing problem in the US, with more than 17 million tons generated each year. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency estimates that 134,000 to 192,000 tons of textiles are thrown out in the state annually.

Target's Denim Take Back Event builds on the success of its car seat trade-in program, which has recycled over 2.6 million car seats since 2016. The retailer aims to reduce waste and keep used denim out of landfills with this initiative.

Gena Fox, Target's senior vice president of merchandising for apparel and accessories, stated in a news release that the Denim Take Back Event is an easy way for families to give their used denim a new life. She added that the discount offer makes it more affordable for customers to refresh their denim wardrobes while contributing to sustainability efforts.

Target sells denim apparel through its own brands such as Universal Thread and Wild Fable, as well as national brands like Levi's.
