Team USA's Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook made their Olympic debuts together in the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard event at the Paris Olympics on July 27, 2024. They finished in second place with a score of 314.64 points, earning Team USA its first medal of the Games.
Bacon and Cook missed out on the Olympics last year but have both competed and won medals in previous Olympic Games and World Championships. China's Yani Chang and Yiwen Chang dominated the event with a score of 337.68 points, winning their first Olympic medals of their careers.
China has been a dominant force in diving for decades, having won 71 out of 98 gold medals in total (47 golds, 23 silvers, and 10 bronzes). Chinese women have won gold six times in seven Olympic Games in the synchronized springboard event.
The United States has not had an Olympic gold medalist in diving since David Boudia won the men's platform title at London 2012. The last time Team USA earned a medal in this event was when Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnston finished second in the synchronized springboard competition at London 2012.
Bacon, who will also compete in the individual springboard event, hails from Indianapolis and competed at the University of Minnesota. Cook is from The Woodlands, Texas, and attended Stanford. They both showed determination after missing out on making the team for Tokyo 2020 due to injury.
The first full day of competition in Paris saw Americans competing in various events including swimming, gymnastics, and tennis. Team USA divers will compete again on July 31 when Jessica Parratto and Delaney Schnell represent Team USA in the women's synchronized 10-meter platform event.
The men's divers will compete on August 2 with Tyler Downs and Greg Duncan representing Team USA in the men's synchronized 3-meter springboard final.
