In a surprising turn of events, Texas A&M University President Gen. Mark Welsh met with the Texas A&M baseball team on June 26, 2024, to congratulate them on their historic national championship run. The team had just returned from Omaha, Nebraska, where they lost in the championship game against Tennessee.
Welsh praised the team for their exceptional performance and respect towards opponents and the 12th Man. However, he criticized former coaches for detracting from the celebration of their achievement. Among those coaches was Jim Schlossnagle, who had been openly vocal in his support of fired Deputy Athletics Director Chris Park.
Schlossnagle left Texas A&M on June 25, 2024, to join rival school Texas as its baseball coach. His departure came just one day after the team's defeat in the College World Series and added fuel to the intense rivalry between the two schools.
Texas went 36-24 in the 2024 season under its previous head coach, but Schlossnagle's decision to leave Texas A&M for its biggest rival was met with backlash from fans and media alike. In a statement, Welsh expressed his disappointment over the timing of Schlossnagle's departure and not being able to meet with his team beforehand.
Schlossnagle had a 945-451 career record over 23 seasons as coach at UNLV, TCU, and Texas A&M. He appeared in the College World Series seven times. Texas paid Texas A&M a $2.7 million buyout as part of the hire.
Texas is set to join the Southeastern Conference on July 1, adding another layer of intensity to the rivalry between these two schools.
Despite his departure, several Texas A&M baseball players have entered the transfer portal. Jace LaViolette, Gavin Grahovac, Kaeden Kent, Jack Bell, Hayden Schott and Max Kaufer are among those who have left the team.
