Thousands of ultranationalist Israelis marked the annual 'Jerusalem Day' on June 5, 2024, by parading through occupied East Jerusalem with Israeli flags. The event, which is meant to commemorate the capture of East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War, has long been a source of tension between Israelis and Palestinians. This year's march was no exception.
Palestinian journalist Saif Kwasmi was attacked by some of the marchers as they made their way through the Old City, including near Damascus Gate and the Muslim Quarter. The Israeli government allowed the flag march to proceed despite condemnation from Saudi Arabia, which views it as a provocation to Muslims around the world.
Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry issued a statement decrying Israel for allowing such an event in the Old City of Jerusalem, including its Muslim Quarter. The condemnation came amid frustration in Riyadh over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's continued refusal to accept a pathway to a future Palestinian state.
The march featured some far-right participants who assaulted journalists, harassed Palestinians, and chanted racist slogans against Arabs. The Israeli police arrested at least 18 suspects in connection with the incidents.
Meanwhile, tensions remained high between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. IDF officials confirmed striking a school in Gaza, stating that a Hamas compound was inside. Dozens of people were killed and injured as a result of the Israeli strike on the UNRWA school.
Israeli forces continued to conduct incursions in Rafah ahead of a possible large-scale invasion. The United States and 16 other countries issued a joint statement calling for Hamas to accept a cease-fire proposal and hostage release deal outlined by President Joe Biden.
Despite the ongoing tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel's claim to Jerusalem as its capital. He also warned of possible escalation on the Lebanon front.
