In the southern Gaza city of Rafah, thousands of tonnes of food and medicine are still waiting to enter the region, despite aid arriving at the Egyptian side of the border. The situation has led to a severe shortage of aid distribution in Gaza. According to NPR's report, only half the normal amount of trucks needed for daily assistance is entering Gaza recently.
The main issue lies with Israeli military operations and other war-related obstacles that are hindering the United Nations and aid groups from distributing assistance in a timely manner. The U.N. panel of independent experts has accused Israel of engaging in a campaign of starvation and genocide in Gaza, which has resulted in famine across all areas.
Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian physician and politician, told Democracy Now that the goal of Israel is total ethnic cleansing. He explained that the Israeli expulsion order for Gaza City is part of this plan.
The situation in Gaza has been described as a 'targeted starvation campaign' by United Nations rights experts. They have accused Israel of intentionally causing famine and genocide, which has resulted in the deaths of children. Thirty-four Palestinians, including children, have died from malnutrition since October 2023.
Despite these claims and the ongoing crisis in Gaza, no official declaration of famine has been made by the United Nations. The U.N. experts have called for an end to Israel's bombardment of Gaza and prioritization of humanitarian aid delivery by land.
In addition to this, several trucks reaching Gaza are loaded with commercial goods that are sold at prices most Palestinians cannot afford, further exacerbating the crisis.
