Three Bodies Discovered Near Mount Fuji: Concerns Over Crowding and Safety Amidst Popular Tourist Destination

Three bodies were discovered near the crater of Mount Fuji in central Japan on June 26, 2024. The individuals were found during a search for a missing climber who went missing after climbing the mountain on Friday night.

According to reports from various sources, including NHK and Jiji Press, the three bodies were located separately from one another and all showed no signs of life. Their identities are currently being confirmed by local authorities.

The missing climber, a Tokyo resident in his 50s, had sent photos from the summit to his family on Sunday before going missing. Another climber was reported to have fallen ill and lost consciousness on Wednesday while climbing the mountain and later died in a hospital.

Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain, straddling Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, and is a popular tourist destination. The official climbing season for the Yoshida Trail, the most popular trail on Mount Fuji, is set to begin next Monday.

The discovery of three bodies near the crater comes as concerns over overcrowding on Mount Fuji continue to mount. Last month, a barrier was put up in a popular viewing spot for Mount Fuji in the town of Fujikawaguchiko due to complaints from residents about littering, trespassing, and traffic violations.

Hikers using the Yoshida Trail will be charged 2,000 yen ($13) each this summer and entries capped at 4,000 to ease congestion. In addition to these measures, regional officials have raised safety and environmental concerns linked to overcrowding on the mountain.

Exact numbers of tourists visiting Fuji and what constitutes carrying capacity are up for debate. Thomas Jones, a professor of sustainability and tourism at Japan's Ritsumeikan University who has studied the mountain since 2008, told CBS News last year that there isn't really a concerted effort to limit the number of visitors.

Mount Fuji is a symbol of Japan and once-peaceful pilgrimage site. The official climbing season for trails on the Shizuoka Prefecture side is expected to open July 10.
