In recent developments, a growing number of House Democrats have called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his key press conference at the NATO summit. Three prominent Democrats, Jim Himes, Scott Peters, and Eric Sorensen, urged Biden to step aside due to concerns about his ability to effectively challenge former President Donald Trump in November.
Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), a ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, expressed his concern for Biden's legacy and American democracy in making this call. He was followed by Reps. Lloyd Doggett, Seth Moulton, Raul Grijalva, Mike Quigley, Angie Craig, Adam Smith, Mikie Sherrill, Pat Ryan and Earl Blumenauer.
Biden's debate performance last month has been a major point of contention for these Democrats. Despite Biden's defiant declaration that he is 'not going anywhere,' the pressure to withdraw continues to mount as he loses ground in the polls against Trump.
The calls for Biden to step down come amid concerns over his ability to effectively defend his accomplishments and address issues facing American democracy. Some Democrats believe a younger contender would be better suited for the role.
However, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer continue to support Biden's campaign.
