FORDYCE, ARK. - A mass shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas on Friday left three people dead and 11 others injured, including two law enforcement officers. The suspect, identified as Travis Eugene Posey from New Edinburg, was taken into custody after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement.
According to reports from multiple sources including the Dallas County Sheriff's Office and Arkansas State Police Department, the shooting occurred at the Mad Butcher grocery store located on West 4th Street in Dallas County. The incident took place shortly after 11:30 a.m.
Three people were killed during the shooting, identified as Callie Weems, a nurse; an unidentified man; and another unidentified woman. Eleven civilians were injured, including two officers who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was identified as Travis Eugene Posey from New Edinburg. He is facing three counts of capital murder with additional charges pending.
Authorities stated that the shooting occurred inside the grocery store and spilled out into the parking lot where gunfire was exchanged between Posey and law enforcement. The suspect was shot during this exchange before being taken into custody.
The Mad Butcher grocery store is located near a Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Tractor Supply Co. in Dallas County.
Helen Browning, the mother of one of the victims, Callie Weems, expressed her grief over the loss of her daughter. She stated that Callie was shopping when she was shot and killed.
The motive for the shooting is currently unknown and investigations are ongoing.
