Three Leading Foundations Join Forces to Invest $300M in Global Health Research and Development

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Wellcome, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have joined forces to invest $300 million over three years in scientific research and development for global health equity. The partnership aims to address critical issues such as the health impacts of climate change, infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and disease surveillance. With funding for global health reportedly 'faltering' amid debt crises and other trends, this collaboration is poised to open doors for further contributions from other funders and partners.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation, based in Denmark, Wellcome from the United Kingdom, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have each committed $100 million to this initiative. The partnership was announced at the Novo Nordisk Foundation's Global Science Summit in Denmark. Initial funding will focus on climate/sustainability, infectious diseases including AMR, and interactions between nutrition, immunity, diseases, and developmental outcomes.

Mark Suzman, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation expressed his excitement about the potential for scientific breakthroughs in agriculture, health, and nutrition. He emphasized that every sector has a role to play in scaling up existing innovations and developing tools for tomorrow.

The collaboration between these three foundations is expected to tackle some of the biggest disease threats facing people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
