In recent years, the number of homes for sale in the US priced under $200,000 has significantly decreased from around 50% to less than 25%. However, there are still cities where affordable housing can be found. According to Realtor.com's analysis of data from various sources, the following ten US cities offer a large number of homes under this price threshold: Lauderdale Lakes and Lauderhill in Florida, Akron and Cleveland in Ohio, Detroit in Michigan, Rockford in Illinois, Lansing in Michigan again, Albany in Georgia (not New York as mentioned erroneously), Niagara Falls in New York, and Rochester in New York.
Lauderdale Lakes and Lauderhill are suburbs of Fort Lauderdale that offer the most affordable homes. Approximately 85% of listings in Lauderdale Lakes are priced under $200,000, with a median home price of $149,00. Detroit also has over 64% of its listings priced below this amount.
Affordable housing is crucial for first-time buyers and retirees living on a fixed income. Cities like Akron and Cleveland in Ohio have become popular destinations due to their lower cost of living, with over 61% and 64% of listings priced under $200, respectively.
Albany, Georgia offers an even more significant discount compared to other cities. Housing is approximately 40% less expensive in Albany than in Atlanta. Detroit has also become a popular place for first-time investors due to the city's lower home prices.
Despite these affordable options, it is essential to note that the availability of homes under $200,000 may not last long as demand continues to grow and prices rise.
